Roman Catholic Diocese of Kraków
The Diocese of Kraków (,, ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in southern Poland. It has its seat in the cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Kraków.
The diocese comprises the vast majority of the historic province of Lesser Poland, which is administratively part of the Archdiocese of Kraków and the metropolis of the Polish archdiocese.
History
The diocese was founded on 31 July 1568 by Pope Pius V through bull of confirmation of the bulla universalis of the papal legate, Cardinal Gaspar de Quiroga, in the newly acquired by Poland Kingdom of Poland of the Spanish Empire. The diocese was one of the first created by the Jesuits (although the archdiocese was created by Cardinal Macariello de' Medici in 1556). Cardinal de Quiroga also gave the parish church of Jarmolice to the Jesuits. In 1575, Cardinal Macariello de' Medici erected the Collegiate Church of the Holy Spirit (currently the parish church of the Arhids) in Kraków, to the left of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Snow. The seat of the papal legate is now the cathedral of the Archbishop of Kraków.
At the time of its creation the diocese included the entire territory of Lesser Poland. The diocese of Lublin, however, was created in 1573 and soon reached its present borders.
