Tara Stiles This Is Yoga 4 Dvd S: A Comprehensive Guide to Yoga for All Levels

In this mini guide, you'll find what are, in my opinion, the five best beginner yoga DVDs out there. I tried to pick programs that are accessible for everyone but allow you to grow as your practice progresses, as well as DVDs that fit specific fitness-related goals.

As the name implies, this DVD is a terrific introduction to yoga for anyone curious about the practice but intimidated by learning the ropes in a class. Tamal Dodge discusses the fundamentals of yoga poses and their effects, offering a comprehensive array of information without overwhelming viewers with complicated explanations or a lot of unfamiliar words. The two 30-minute segments, Hatha and Flow, offer exposure to two popular but different styles of yoga, which may help beginners decide what better suits their lifestyle and needs. The DVD comes packaged with a yoga strap to help modify and ease into poses.

IÂm hearing more and more chatter about this, some neutral, other positive, and a lot more just plain negative. ItÂs interesting to see how people can react strongly about yoga. I suppose above everything, I think itÂs a good sign that people are indeed discussing yoga. I do however think itÂs unfortunate that many people choose to exert so much negative energy criticizing. It going against everything I hold dear about yoga in the first place.

What is really neat about these DVDs is that they are broken down by pose. You stretch your body to hold the pose in each segment. It makes yoga more accessible and easy. Personally, I found the rhythm refreshing. I panicked a little at first because the camera switches focus a little too much and it is unclear who the teacher really is, but, by the same token, this is refreshing and different from traditional workout DVDs. I understand where they are coming from; after all, there are three yogis on the screen who were moving in perfect sync, so it did not matter who is teaching. You could identify with any of them; they all had the poses perfected.

Many yoga teachers on this list are inspiring because they have taken yoga off the mat and into the real world. Alan Finger is no exception. He co-created a wildly successful yoga business, YogaWorks, and has been a yoga instructor for 50 years. In addition to creating a chain of yoga studios that span the United States, Finger was also instrumental in brining yoga teachings to America in the 1960s. He and his father created ISHTA Yoga (Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda) in New York.

While there are many types of yoga, Ashtanga yoga is definitely one of the most popular types of yoga in the United States. One person who is well known in the Ashtanga community is Tim Miller. Miller was actually one of the first western yogis to be certified to teach Ashtanga yoga. According to this article in Yoga Journal, Miller is often credited as being the first person to bring yoga to America!

Cyndi Lee first tried yoga in college in 1971 and over the course of the next 20 years she deepened her practice, studying multiple traditions, including Sivananda, Kundalini, Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Jivamukti. Lee taught in New York City part time while pursuing a successful dance career until 1994 when she started teaching yoga full time at various studios throughout the city. Lee is the first female teacher to fully integrate yoga asana and Tibetan Buddhism in her practice and teachings. In 1998 Lee founded the OM Yoga Center in New York City, which she ran for almost 15 years and was widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive studios in the world. Many of the teachers on this list, including Elena Brower, Amy Ippoliti, Margi Young, and Annie Piper were early teachers and teacher trainees with Lee at OM Yoga. Lee currently resides in Virginia where she founded Yoga Goodness Studio, which offers alignment-based Vinyasa yoga, grounded in the meditation practices of mindfulness and compassion. Lee continues to lead teacher trainings (at the 200-, 300-, and 500-hour level), retreats, and workshops around the world.

Judith Lasater, Ph.D., best known for co-founding Yoga Journal magazine, was one of the earliest disciples of B.K.S. Iyengar in America. Teaching now for more than 45 years, Lasater leads workshops and trainings around the world. A celebrated author eight books, and many more articles, Lasater is a physical therapist and has a doctorate in East-West psychology, and she is recognized for popularizing restorative yoga. In addition to her work as an author, editor, and teacher, Lasater co-founded the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, where she still teaches to this day.

A student of yoga since age 15, Zoë Slatoff Ponte, has been teaching Ashtanga yoga since 2002 when she was first granted the blessing to teach from her guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. An authorized level-two teacher, Slatoff-Ponte runs an Ashtanga Yoga Shala on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, alongside her fellow Ashtanga teacher and husband Ben Ponte. In addition to her accomplished teaching, Slatoff-Ponte is also a scholar of Asian Languages and culture who recently released a book called Yogavataranam, a Sanskrit textbook for yoga students that integrates traditional and academic methods of learning, teaching grammar and reading through classical yoga texts.

I started my yoga practice recently. I did yoga before as part of my workout but this time its totally different. I found peace and balance in the practice. I actually dream of being able to share and teach this beautiful practice to others. Thank you for sharing this. I actually love Yoga with Adrienne but would like to see others too.

I started running this January. The last time I ran was in middle school about 20 years ago. I have been using a coaching app on my phone that keeps me motivated. I love watching YouTube videos for tips on running. I know you have talked about your workout clothes in the past here and there, but I would love a dedicated video. Thanks for the recommendation on the yoga videos, I will check that out.My goal is a 10k at the end of May, the Bolder Boulder. Yea!! 2ff7e9595c
